{"id":311,"date":"2005-11-27T15:40:21","date_gmt":"2005-11-27T20:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.casiello.net\/blog\/?p=311"},"modified":"2005-11-27T15:40:24","modified_gmt":"2005-11-27T20:40:24","slug":"more-on-sony-malware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.casiello.net\/blog\/2005\/11\/27\/more-on-sony-malware\/","title":{"rendered":"More On Sony Malware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casiello.net\/blog\/archives\/307\">Sony &#8216;CD&#8217;s that installs a trojan horse program (rootkit) on your PC?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, it turns out these bastions of copyright protection (Won&#8217;t somebody please think of the content creators?!?) <a href=\"http:\/\/dewinter.com\/modules.php?name=News&#038;file=article&#038;sid=215\">may have used copyrighted code in violation of the license.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/yro.slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=05\/11\/15\/1250229&#038;tid=117&#038;tid=188&#038;tid=17\">slashdot  author CmdrTaco puts it  &#8220;So apparently Sony violates your privacy to create a backdoor onto your machine using code that violates an Open Source license.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sony is no longer selling the  malware discs, and will be pulling them from store shelves.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, virus writers found out about the trojan&#8217;s file-hiding capabilities which now infects computers on a href=&#8221;http:\/\/wired-vig.wired.com\/news\/print\/0,1294,69573,00.html&#8221;>a half a million networks<\/a>. Sony issued a patch to remove the trojan &#8211; the patch stays on your computer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedom-to-tinker.com\/?p=928\">allowing any website you visit to download and run code on your computer<\/a>. Sorry, pal, you don&#8217;t own your computer anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Lovely.
