False Precision, Ya Think?

May 13th, 2006

Somebody on a mailing list noted that Google Maps reports lat and long to 13 decimal places, and calculated that comes out to a precision of about eleven Ångströms (Angstroms for the Unicode-impaired).

For folks whose physics is a few years behind them (or ahead of them!) Ångströms are commonly used to measure the wavelength of light – one Ångström is 10-10 meters; a piece of paper is about one million Ångströms thick.

According to Nature magazine, researchers at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have designed a quantum computer where you don’t have to run a program for it to give you answers.

Does this mean Quantum Windows won’t crash? Probably not, but at least it may be crashing in somebody else’s universe.

RIAA Says Ripping CDs to Your iPod is NOT Fair Use

RIAA filing to Copyright Office:
“Nor does the fact that permission to make a copy in particular circumstances is often or even routinely granted, necessarily establish that the copying is a fair use when the copyright owner withholds that authorization. In this regard, the statement attributed to counsel for copyright owners in the MGM v. Grokster case is simply a statement about authorization, not about fair use.”

The First (Irregular) TJA Software Alumni…

December 18th, 2005

…Get-Together And Talk About Everyone Who Didn’t Make It Party was great fun!

Attending were Jeff, Golnaz (who came up with the idea, and we are all much obliged!),
Jeff and Golnaz (click on the picture for the full-size version), Dave, Rich, Dave and Rich, and Brian, Your Humble Blogger, who was not quite flexible enough to be both in front of and behind the camera at the same time. Maybe some of Golnaz’s pix will come out. (I apologize for the quality of the pictures, I’m a crappy photographer.)

Great time catching up with each other, and reminiscing about the Good Old Days. Rest assured, if you weren’t there, we did talk about you, so you’d just better make it to the next one!
